The United States Academic Decathlon is an association of state programs dedicated to recognizing and rewarding academic achievment and excellence in high school students. Each school set up a team of nine students, separated into 3 categories. These categories are Honors or "A" students, Scholastic or "B" students, and Varsity or "C" students. Each team has an oppurtunity to compete in up to three competitions on the local, state, and national level. Students are tested in ten categories.

Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals are awarded for individual events and total score. Winners the winners at each level advance to the next level, until the national championship.
